My favourite, and the one that pushed me towards the Microcosm was this one: Lots of people clearly struggled with the IJ in some of the review videos.įor the Microcosm, this is a good one showing the soundscape possibilities: They showed the musicality of the pedal and that it can do more than just odd noises. These were the ones that I found most helpful for the IJ: Certainly there are reasons to have one over the other IMO, or even to have both if you can afford it!Īlso, a big thankyou to Matt at Hologram. There appears to be a lot of crossover but they are different. If I didn't already have stereo reverb, delay, modulation and looper, I would probably have gone for the Microcosm. The Microcosm wouldn't work in that way and would almost be a standalone tool separate from my pedalboard. It will also integrate nicely into my pedalboard as part of the mono signal chain before the Synesthesia and Collider. The more I looked at the videos of the IJ (from people who understood it, not just the rubbish knob twiddler ones), the more I realised I was looking for those kind of capabilities. So a lot of the base feature set replicates what I have already have, and the looper isn't as flexible as an X4. However, I already have stereo reverb and delay (Collider) and stereo modulation (Synesthesia) on my board, along with a Ditto X4.

So initially the massive feature set and stereo capability led me towards the Microcosm. The IJ has LFO manipulation capabilities. The IJ allows multiple knob movements to be recorded, which is pretty cool. The IJ can do "pure" synth sounds, I'm not sure if the Microcosm has a direct equivalent to the IJ synth mode. The Microcosm also seems to have more options for ARP/sequence style effects. I would say the Microcosm has more flexibility in the glitch/micro sample department than the IJ. There is some overlap in the effect types but there are definite differences. The Microcosm has more delivered presets and user presets. Although the IJ loops the sound samples for a short time, it can't be used as a looper with layers and undo etc.

MICROCOSM REVERB PLUS

The Microcosm has onboard stereo reverb and delay, plus some modulation capabilities, that can be used independent of the effects. That led me towards the Microcosm, as I run a stereo rig. So here's what I would say are the main differences (disclaimer, I haven't played a Microcosm but I have watched every YouTube video available.): I already have my pedal board set up pretty much as I like and was looking to add a "weird" pedal as the final link in the chain to give me something very different from what I already have.

I do ambient/soundscapey stuff but also more conventional post-punk and occasional prog style stuff. I thought I would revive this thread to share my thoughts based on the research I did and what I've found after having a short play with the IJ.īackground - I am a bedroom player/home recordist playing a Bass VI. I have been trying to decide between the Microcosm and IJ for about two weeks and finally just pulled the trigger on an IJ.
